Sport

Using out playground, the Parish Sports field, school basketball courts and the Watershed all classes get the opportunities to learn the skills and compete in the following sports:

Camogie, Gaelic Football, Tag Rugby, Swimming, Basketball, Cycling & Athletics

Gaelic Football

The St. John of God girls have proven their worth on the football pitch in recent years! There is a great enthusiasm for Gaelic Football in our school. This year we had upwards of 50 girls from 4th, 5th and 6th class training hard every Tuesday. We have close ties to Kilkenny City Ladies Football Club which allows the girls to continue to play Ladies Football after the school season has finished. Gaelic Football is also incorporated into our P.E. programme so that all girls in the school get the chance to play throughout the school year.

Camogie

The camogie season begins in late spring every year.

The girls take part in the Schools Camogie League, competing against lots of other schools from across the county.

Our team trains once a week, with matches being played both at home and away.

Swimming

The girls from the St. John of God School are very lucky to have the opportunity to attend swimming classes at the Watershed three times during their primary school life. The experienced coaches in the Watershed ensure that all girls are taught the skills necessary to progress through the different levels.

Our school compete in the Annual City Schools’ Swimming Gala. Children from 1st to 6th class compete in various strokes; breast stroke, back stroke and front crawl. We have had continued success at this competition over the years.

Basketball

All senior classes are taught the skills of basketball as part of the school’s P.E. programme.

In addition to this the 5th and 6th class girls take part in a lunchtime basketball league.

Our matches take place take place throughout the month of May.

The whole school gets involved by cheering from the sidelines.

Each team is made up of a mix of 5th and 6th, with the winning team being presented with medals on our annual Sports Day.

Tag Rugby

Noel Devlin, Club Community Rugby Officer with Leinster Rugby (IRFU), coaches the girls from second to sixth class during the first and second terms every year. The children learn all the basic skills of tag rugby and compete in a competition at the end of the term. The girls in St. John of God love tag rugby and Noel does a fantastic job.

Athletics

Every September we enter the Kilkenny City Inter-schools cross country competition. The children practice at home and at school for the event. The trials are conducted at school and 14 fastest girls from 4th, 5th and 6th class are selected for the school team. The event is held in the Castle Park, and the children enjoy competing against the girls from all the city schools in Kilkenny.
